Compostable

Packaging certified to break down into compost under the right conditions, leaving no toxic residue. In Australia look for AS 4736 (industrial) or AS 5810 (home) certification — and check your local organics collection accepts it.

"Compostable" is a specific, testable claim — not a vibe. To carry the label legitimately in Australia, packaging is tested against a standard: AS 4736 covers industrial (commercial) composting, where higher heat and controlled conditions break the item down within a set time; AS 5810 covers home composting, which is slower and cooler, so far fewer products qualify.

The practical catch is the disposal path. A certified-compostable cup only becomes compost if it actually reaches a facility that accepts it — in a general-waste bin it heads to landfill like anything else, and in a kerbside recycling bin it's usually a contaminant. Before switching a line, check what your council or commercial organics collector will take.

For a café or takeaway, compostable packaging is most worthwhile where food residue rules out clean recycling anyway — coffee cups, food-soiled containers, cutlery. Look for the certification number and logo on the product spec, and pair it with clear bin signage so staff and customers sort it correctly.
