What is the difference between a chip cup, a chips box and a tray?
A chip cup or chip carton is tall and narrow, so customers can hold it while walking and eat from the top. A tray is shallow and open, so the food sits flat and is easier to share or eat with a fork.
In the Packery range, the cup-style options are the brown cardboard chip carton and the Small, Medium and Large chips boxes. The tray options are the white cardboard No.1 to No.5 trays, the newsprint-colour corrugated Envirorange open trays, and the white sugarcane 9" square trays. Browse all of them on the serving containers page.
What sizes do chip cups and chips boxes come in?
The brown cardboard chips boxes come in Small, Medium and Large, all in cartons of 1000: Small at 83x130x125mm, Medium at 83x132x140mm and Large at 87x133x170mm. For a smaller serve, the chip carton is 65x65x100mm and comes in cartons of 500.
The Small and Medium boxes share a similar footprint and differ mainly in height, so the Serving Container – Chips Box Medium (Carton of 1000) is the step up when a small serve looks thin. The Serving Container – Chips Box Large (Carton of 1000) is the tallest of the range at 87x133x170mm.

Which container suits chips, wedges or snacks?
For hot chips eaten on the go, a tall chips box or chip carton is the practical choice because it keeps the serve upright in the hand. For wedges, nuggets and other chunky sides, an open tray is easier because the pieces sit side by side and sauce can go on top.
- Chips to walk away with: the chip carton for a small serve, or the Small, Medium and Large chips boxes for larger serves.
- Wedges and sides: the No.3 Packaging – White Medium Tray Cardboard (Carton of 500) at 140x85x55mm or the No.4 Packaging – White Large Tray Cardboard (Carton of 400) at 170x95x55mm.
- Small snacks and tasting serves: the No.1 Packaging – White Extra Small Tray Cardboard (Carton of 1000) at 90x55x35mm, $0.04 each.
- Hot dogs with chips on the side: the Takeaway Container – White Hot Dog Tray Cardboard (Carton of 250) at 190x70x50mm, $0.10 each.
- Chips with a main meal: the Takeaway Container – Square Tray 9" 3 Compartment (Carton of 200) keeps chips apart from the main and a side.
What materials are chip cups and trays made from?
The chips boxes and chip carton are brown cardboard, and the No.1 to No.5 trays and hot dog tray are white cardboard. The Envirorange open trays are corrugated in a newsprint colour, and the 9" square trays are white sugarcane.
Sugarcane trays are made from sugarcane fibre, a by-product of sugar production. Corrugated board has a fluted inner layer between flat sheets. Choose by the look you want on the counter: brown cardboard for a natural look, white cardboard for a clean look, and sugarcane for a plated-meal feel.
Can I get chip boxes printed with my logo?
Yes, custom printing with your logo is available on selected products. In this range, the chips boxes, the chip carton and the white cardboard trays are marked as available for custom print, while the Envirorange corrugated trays and sugarcane square trays are not. See custom print for details.
